Class size is strictly limited to 10 participants.
This ten-session class is designed to give actors a clearly articulated, fundamental understanding of Shakespeare’s verse, along with tools for speaking it eloquently, with personal depth and ownership. As actors, our fundamental concern is with an oral, expressive, and personal relationship to the text. We find many clues to dramatic situation, to a character or speaker’s status, state of mind or being, all embedded in the fabric of the plays and sonnets. The Shakespeare class is a voice and text class, designed to deepen the student’s awareness of the interdependence and connections between the two.
We will begin with the sonnets, using them as our way in to the structure of the verse, and then move into speeches and/or soliloquies. The work on speeches and soliloquies will allow you to develop an embodied sense of the synthesis between voice, speech, text, and acting, while weaving the structure and workings of Shakespeare’s verse into that synthesis. You will gain an understanding of scansion, and the ability to notate it. These goals will primarily be accomplished through physically based exercises which underscore and reinforce your ability to speak Shakespeare’s words from yourself – using your authentic voice, connected to impulse.
Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move in, and that does not restrict your breath in any way. There is a good floor in the studio, but feel free to bring a yoga mat if you wish, as we will be doing some floor work during most sessions.
